In this digital period, taking pictures became extremely easy. Everyone can photograph anything at any time, without having to think of material wasting. Most of these images were produced by digital cameras, video cameras, mobile phones and other digital visual equipments. Producing pictures is simple, casual and cheap: photography has been turned into picture sketching in a way of a diary, free and occasional.
The birth of Hipic stems from the interest in the excess of pictures in the overflow era, even these fuzzy, blurry, unfocused pictures and the repeated shots. In the past, these pictures were deleted, or occupying a few megabytes of a hard disk, forgotten. What deserve to be studied is: are these images without any particular aesthetics, or use, really worthless? Or only meant to be discovered?
Hipic considers that overflow of pictures has some unique residual artistic values. Pictures flows production differs from traditional methods, no matters if it is photography or drawing, its process is mechanical, automatic, unconscious; pictures overflow challenges the authenticity of elite photography, in fact it reflects more objectively the temporary space of life; pictures overflow queers aesthetic standard of traditional elite images, and uphold multivalent, individual, minority, non professional, aesthetic tastes.
On internet, flood of pictures appears on the WebPages, numerous images will now simultaneously pop out on a window. To include more and more pictures, the webpage is now larger, and the scrollbar longer. Hipic collecting and displaying system is based on another concept. It displays the pictures flood in a linear time, based on one minute per picture, one after the other unceasingly: images embody time. This way, 60 minutes in the hour makes 60 pictures, 1440 minutes in a day, makes 1440 pictures. It strives to reactivate, creates the new life of the pictures which are zero usage rates, remaining still in the hard disk, internet, or kept in memory, devoted to the discovering of inner residual values, presented to the world in an artistic way. Anyone can send any picture to www.hipic.org, turning pieces of life into Hipic art life and sharing with people in the rest of the world.
Through recycle the pictures, Hipic builds an open, dynamic multimedia public platform: a reciprocal osmosis between art and life. As a new kind of public art, it creates more possibilities with people and the world. One minute, one picture. Let’s Hipic together!Back to top
When we take a photograph, our first motivation is to keep a moment that is worth to remember. However, with the transmission changes, in this reading pictures period, in particularly coming from internet, numerous images come straight to us. Even those strong impressions, widely circulating, also being rapidly diffused, are covered and forgotten.
Hipic is an extreme example, each picture – only shown once - is turned into a one minute time length on Hipic platform, with the following results: you can’t go back and see the precedent picture, you can’t make any settings, you can’t foresee the next minute. No past, no future, only the present remains, one picture forever.
《3 Hours @ Hipic》selected 180 images that have been displayed on Hipic. This pocket book is an extension of Hipic, not to say a self-reactionary experience in Hipic’s concept. It opened a door for Hipic. We hope that it will become an un-periodical album, and hope to invite various people to participate to its editing.
